The World Health Organisation defines Chiropractic as “A health care profession concerned with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of disorders of the neuromusculoskeletal system and the effects of these disorders on general health. There is an emphasis on manual techniques, including joint adjustment and/or manipulation with a particular focus on subluxations.”

But what does that mean for you??

Put simply – the chiro team here at Elemental check you to detect areas of your spine that are not moving or functioning well – often called Vertebral Subluxations, and then work with you to correct any issues that may be affecting your ability to properly express a fully healthy life.

Vertebral Subluxations do not always have obvious symptoms at that spot in the spine. For example, a problem with your lower spine may cause your upper spine to compensate and you may experience symptoms in the upper section such as a headache. This is an example of an effect on the kinematic chain. This chain sequence can also produce effects down the body, where a lower back problem may cause you to walk incorrectly and perhaps develop ankle or knee pain.

You may be adjusted while standing, sitting, lying down or in combination – it depends on your factors such as your preference, your level of mobility and flexibility, and the clinical judgement of your chiropractor. You can sometimes hear a clicking sound as the spinal joints are adjusted, but this is usually painless, and recent research has shown it is simply the movement of gasses in the fluid that surrounds your joints. Clicking (or cracking) of your joints does not cause arthritis (sorry Grandma was wrong..) as the main effect is a better moving spine!

At Elemental, we focus very much on Corrective Postural Care for the improvement of long-term health goals. We can help in the short term too, so please discuss with us exactly what your needs and preferences are when we meet you.

Dr. Adam Smith – Principal Chiropractor and Studio Owner

Hi there! I’m Adam (you can call me Dr Adam if you want but just Adam is fine). I know that not everyone reads these bio’s but just in case you are keen to know a bit more about me here goes!

I had my first chiropractic adjustment at 8 years old. I didn’t have and specific aches or pains that I remember, but my Dad did at the time! Dad took the whole family for a checkup and after that regular chiropractic care was just a part of all our lives. All three of my kids had their first chiropractic check on the day of their birth, and weekly ever since. Notice that I wrote ‘check’ just there, as I don’t always need to DO very much with them to keep them moving well, but I do check.

After graduating Macquarie University in Sydney, Australia I worked in many parts of Australia, learning many different styles of chiropractic care that I use as needed to get the best results.

My family moved to Scotland in 2005 and we lived just south of Glasgow for nearly 8 years where I worked with the largest chiropractic group in Europe, gaining invaluable experience along the way. We moved back to Australia in 2013 to be closer to family and now we are settled on the Gold Coast – and we love it here!

Chiropractic became my profession of choice at 12 years old. By that time, I had been witness to many, many wonderful results from a chiropractic adjustment, just by sitting in the reception area at my chiropractor’s and watching the people come and go. As is often the case people came in feeling low, and not experiencing life to the full, only to walk out smiling after their adjustment.

This sort of thing was commonplace according to my chiropractor at the time, Dr Michael. One day after my adjustment, Dr Michael let me stay and observe him work for the afternoon. That was it – I was hooked from then on. What I saw was babies smiling and or even sleeping through their checkup, I saw whole families just like mine coming through the office, I heard people telling me all the things that they could do because they were looking after themselves and their spines were moving better! These people had made regular chiropractic adjustments a part of their life as well.

When not adjusting and caring for practice members, I like to do all sorts of activities with my family, like playing soccer, SCUBA diving and I have even been known to enjoy golf, weight lifting and especially HOT YOGA. I also serve on the Board of the Chiropractors’ Association of Australia (QLD), as well as other professional association engagements.

With more than 13 years’ experience with people of all ages and backgrounds, and having served as Team Chiropractor for the Erebus Motorsport V8 Supercar Series Team from 2013 – 2016, I might just be the right chiropractor for you – check out below to see how I can help you be better!

Your first wealth is your health!

Congratulations on taking the first step toward achieving your very own version of better! When your spine moves better, you can be better – it really can be as simple as that!

Your posture is the window to your spinal health.

Many things play a role in our health overall and the spine is certainly no exception! Daily activities such as sitting at a desk, or in your car, using hand-held devices, and sleeping in poor positions can contribute over time to poor posture, and even low energy. More obvious things like, your last car accident, a fall playing sport or breaking a bone can add to the issues too. Even the birthing process can be very tough on both the mother’s and baby’s spines.

How is your posture looking? Have you checked lately?

If your posture is ‘less than ideal’, your spine and nervous system could be under pressure. This, in turn, could be causing ongoing pain and longer-term affects on your body by not allowing it to work at its best. If you often experience pain and symptoms such as lower back pain, neck pain, headaches, low energy or are having difficulty sleeping, you may benefit from chiropractic care. Your quality of life is directly dependent on the quality of your health.
